Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
