Government Official States Ministry of Defence Looking at Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Staff Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.
A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing secret information in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for Defence Staff
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any car, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
The announcement follows reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
This wider defence situation underscores the significance of robust measures and vigilance in every areas of official operations, from vehicle use to communication habits.
